There are moments in which our daily activities put us in need of doing more than what we usually have to. After reaching the age of eighteen, it is suggested that people sleep for seven to nine hours every night. Not sleeping for that amount of time can actually affect our daily lives.

Whether it’s work, education, or other activities alike, there are moments in which everything piles up and forces us to stay awake for extra hours as it sometimes seems ultimately necessary to fully take care of everything that’s pending.

Doing this can indeed help you clear up that extra work from your mind, but will also take treasured sleep time from your regular schedule, reducing how productive and energetic you feel along the day. And even if we attempt to fix this through the use of energy drinks, coffee (or other caffeine based drink), or maybe even energy pills, some adverse effects of sleep restraint remain hidden.

Besides helping you feel more energetic and alert, more benefits come from sleeping for enough time. Some of which aren’t as prominent and regular as others, but that doesn’t make them more or less valuable.

Sleep deprivation can have a negative impact on your brain function (this includes overall performance, cognition, and productivity). Additionally, good sleep can enhance your learning potential, as well as improve your problem-solving abilities. A study that involved interns on a “regular schedule” made 36% more mistakes than those interns that were allowed to sleep for extra hours.

Sleeping can also increase your overall athletic performance. This is a little intuitive as you’ll recover more energy from a good night’s sleep, which makes it easier to perform athletic tasks. In a study involving basketball players, it was shown that longer sleep improved their speed, accuracy and reaction times.

Besides improving your athletic performance, sleep can also help you lose weight – it has been proved that sleep deprivation is heavily linked to obesity. This paper declared children and adults with short sleep times were 89% and 55% more likely to suffer obesity, respectively. This all means that sleeping well is critical for losing weight!

If stress is something you’re always dealing with, an adequate amount of time might be just what you need to set yourself free from that stressful routine. Additionally, sometimes sleep deprivation can lead to mental issues like depression. A study has proven that 90% of people who suffer from depression complain about sleep quality.

There are, of course, many more negative symptoms that come from sleep deprivation. Some are even linked to more serious health issues such as heart diseases, strokes or diabetes. Meaning that sleeping for the amount of time you should potentially improve your life’s quality and longevity.

This was just a short list of a few advantages that come with a proper sleep schedule. The bottom line is that a long and good night’s sleep is the best way to start living a healthier life. Meaning that small details like carefully planning your sleep schedule or efficiently performing your daily tasks can help you achieve this.
